Jeff Root from Christian Academy traveled to New York and participated in the Big Apple Music Festival with the Wind Ensemble receiving a 1st place with an excellent rating. The Concert Band received a 3rd place with an excellent rating. The Honor Jazz Band 1st place with an excellent rating and the regular Jazz band received a 2nd place with an excellent rating and in solos and ensembles they had 34 distinguished awards.

Stephanie Puckett from Spencer County Elementary reported her chorus placed 1st in their division with an Excellent rating at Kings Island on Sat. May 22.

David Bretz from Mount Washington Middle School was awarded 1st place in Class A and Best Overall Middle School Band at the Music in the Parks Festival at Cedar Point in Sandusky, Oh. on May 22. They were also mentioned in the Commissioner of Education’s Twitter account during our School to Watch Ceremony. He said and I quote, “At the MWMS to watch ceremony, “Very good band.”
Kathie Anderson reported from Shelby County her school choir performed in the Light up Shelbyville. She has four students who made ACDA Honors State Choir in Lexington, Ky. and also had 12 students who participated in the Shelbyville Elementary School Honors Choir on May the 8th.

Curtis Moss from Eminence Independent Schools reported that his students raised over $500.00 for the American Red Cross at our annual Benefit Concert. A quintet from Eminence Independent played for the Scottish Rite dinner and a student transposed the brass quintet music for the ensemble of a flute, trumpet, alto sax, clarinet, and bass clarinet. The quintet will also perform pre-music at graduation.

Sue Lou Smith reported from Anderson Count her advanced chorus receives Superior Ratings at the Trills and Thrills competition at Kings Island. The Advanced Chorus also hosted the 2nd annual District Honors Children Choir. Twenty forth and fifth graders from the 3 elementary schools in town were chosen to be a part of an all day workshop. The children’s choir worked 5 selected pieces and then performed one of those with the Advanced Chorus in concert that evening.

Cheri Greer reported from Eastside Middle School Band that they participated in Showcase Music Festivals in Ohio and received a Superior rating, 1st Place Concert Band Class A, Outstanding Bass Clarinet Solo, Outstanding Piccolo Solo and 1st place over all Instrumental MS/JH All Classes.

Chip Anderson from Henry County reported Abbie Nelson, 12th grade flute player earned a distinguished at State Solo and Ensemble and Hannah Doyle, 9th grade horn player earned a proficient at State Solo and Ensemble contest. Henry County Young Composers Concert had 13 compositions premiered by student composers at the Henry County Arts Show case on Sat. March 27. Henry County Public Schools held a community-wide arts showcase on March 27. Art works, dance, drama and musical performances were presented by New Castle Elementary, Campbellsburg Elementary, Eastern Elementary, Henry County Middle School and Henry County High School. On April 16th performing organizations (Elementary Show Choirs, Middle School Chorus, High School Jazz Band and Elementary School Recorder and Percussion Ensembles) from 5 schools in the Henry County Public Schools helped raise over 2 thousand dollars while performing for the Judy Lea Benefit dinner and auction. The Judy Lea Fund is a community/school benevolence fund to help offset the cost of extra-curricular activities, field trips and other educational expenses. Hannah Doyle will tour Europe with the Kentucky Ambassadors this summer. Henry County High School Theater Department, in collaboration with the Choral Music, Instrumental Music, Visual Art and Industrial Technology Departments completed a four night run of “Thoroughly Modern Millie” from May 20 to 23. All performers, musicians, set; light, sound and costume design was contributed by students, faculty, staff and community volunteers. James Clark 12th grade won second place in music composition at the State Technology Leadership Program

Kevin Cox reported from East Oldham Middle School traveled on May 15th and played at the King’s Island Music in Parks Festival and received 1st place in their division.

Wendy Davidson from Hebron Middle School reported that 3 bands performed at King’s Island with the 6th grade band received 2nd place and earned an excellent rating. The Hebron Jazz Band took 2nd place and received an excellent rating. The 7th and 8th grade advanced band received a 1st place and earned a superior rating along with the over all award scoring the highest score. Jessica Roederer placed in the top ten in the National Essay contest sponsored by School Band and Orchestra Magazine. The subject of Jessica’s essay was “Why Music Should Remain a Part of the Public School Curriculum.” Jessica will have her essay and picture published in School Band and Orchestra Magazine and was also awarded a $1000.00 music scholarship.

Natalie Hall from Spencer County High School Chorus reported Danielle Curtsinger, selected for the SATB All State Choir will be traveling with Dr. Hatteburg to China this summer in the UL Ambassadors program. They competed in Myrtle Beach this past March in the Fiesta-val competition. SAB received a 1st place and a superior rating. The Madrigal Ensemble received a 1st place and an excellent rating

Meredith Lewis from Saffell Street Elementary had 4 students in All State Children Chorus. Twenty students represented the school for All District Honors Choir directed by Sue Lou Smith. MENC recognizes the school for participation in “The Worlds Largest Concert” and “The National Anthem Project.” The previous 2 years we also received the Arts Inclusion Award and were able to have Lorinda Jones working with us on our new classroom dulcimers.

Peggy Pickett from Spencer County High School reports that the High School Concert Band and Jazz Band competed in Music in the Parks of St. Louis. The Concert Band received an excellent rating and a third place with the Jazz Band receiving 1st place with an excellent rating. Twenty-four students received distinguished ratings.

Congratulations to the Bullitt East Marching Band for making State Marching Band Semi-Finals for the first time in the history of Bullitt East.

Jenny Van Tiem from Shelby County High school reported her percussion ensemble did an outstanding job at Tri-State Competition this winter receiving 1st place all season. The Winter Guard took 6th place at Tri-State Championships in the Scholastic A class. Final Concert will be May 27 before the school is split into two schools.

Eve Witt reported that the Zoneton Middle School had 25 students accepted into the EKU Middle School Honors Band. Fifteen students were selected for the Bullitt County Middle School Honors Band and fifty students participated in the District 5 Solo and Ensemble Festival with 23 students earned distinguished ratings and 19 received a proficient rating. Ten students were recently chosen for the U of L Summer Middle School Wind Band Institute Honor Band and Performance workshop. One student was chosen for the Wesley Shepherd Honor Band at the University of Evansville and will also attend the EKU Stephen Foster Music Camp.

Mary McGillen reported the Shelby County High School Orchestra received a 1st place with an excellent rating in AA String Orchestra from Music in the Parks at Six Flags Great America. Ashley Frank received a distinguished rate at the KMEA State solo and Ensemble Festival.

Stephanie Stephens reported that in Shelby County the Clear Creek Elementary, Wright Elementary, and Simpsonville Elementary Schools 5th grade band students will be performing a concert together as a combined group on Friday June 4th under the Direction of Bradley Nunn, Stephanie Stephens and Emily Royse. The Clear Creek Colt Choir will also perform. The Shelby County Elementary Honors Choir performed on May 8th.

Justin Romney from North Bullitt High School reported the Advanced Women’s choir received a distinguished rating from the 2010 Kentucky State Choral Festival. They received a Superior rating at the Music in the Parks Festival in Cincinnati, Ohio. Victoria Edgar was selected to participate in the Governor’s School for the Arts in the summer of 2009 (musical theatre). These students participated in the University of Louisville Honor Choir: Mariah Richardson, Laruen Collins, Brittany Stewart, Tyler Warden, Houston Miller, Travis Eicher, and Jon Gentry.

Anthony Wise reported from Oldham Middle School the 7th and 8th grade band performed the National Anthem at a Louisville Bats Baseball game Monday May 24th. Charles Noderer, the choir director at OCMS was awarded the Whas 11/EON Excel Award for the Oldham County Schools.

Monica Drury, from Anderson County’s Robert B. Turner Elementary, reported that the school performed a musical. The school took part in the All District Choir event.
