Letter from Brad Rogers, Band Chair:

June 25-27, 2008 marks the 8th year for the Summer Band Symposium, a unique event that began in 2001 as a way for directors to meet in a more relaxed setting, at a more relaxed time of year, and have time to attend clinics and discuss “Kentucky band world” issues. Having grown each year, this year’s event will include plenty of opportunities for professional development, discussion, and kicking back. Many KMEA business meetings will also be happening at this time in an effort to maximize teachers’ time in the summer. The Band Council and the Marching Band Committee will be having their summer meetings during this time.

Every band teacher should find something of interest in the scheduled clinic presentations. Paul Shepherd (saxophone) and Troy Stovall (trumpet) are well-respected as performers and teachers; they’ll be presenting this year’s “How the Best Start the Best…” sessions regarding working with beginning and developing saxophone and trumpet students. Directors at every level, concert and marching bands alike will find value in a clinic covering performance techniques on all those percussion instruments that invariably end up in the pit ensemble or are least likely to be played well in concert band—cymbals, triangle, tambourine, “the kitchen sink”, etc. Mark Tate will present this clinic; he will also give some hints on how to take the pit ensemble “book” you had written and make it work for the players you ended up with! Built into the schedule again this year will be the opportunity to enjoy an evening performance by the Southern Kentucky Concert Band.

Of interest to directors at all levels will be a panel discussion led by KASMD (Kentucky Association of School Music Dealers) on the value-added relationships available through music dealers in our state—from getting the beginning band off on the right foot to “heading off Murphy” at the contest or festival and everything in between will be on the table.

There will be a golf scramble on Wednesday afternoon that is well suited for the free-swinging and the frequent-swinging duffers. Prizes provided compliments of Jerry Lindbloom, Kustom Designs. Wednesday night will include a complimentary “mixer”! Thursday night will feature the traditional complimentary happy hour at Buffalo Wild Wings, thanks to the sponsorship of Royal Music! Both Thursday & Friday breakfast buffets will be sponsored by Bob Kapp of Kapp Inc. and Kent Sanders of At-Ease Travel.

All events are at the beautiful University Plaza-Holiday Inn and a special rate is available for Symposium guests. Registration for the Symposium is available through the KMEA website. Whether you come for the meetings, the golf, the clinics, the concert, or the food, there is something for everyone at the 2008 Summer Band Symposium. Will you be in Bowling Green on June 25-27?
